Macondo Trio

 Citadelic festival 2026

MAY 29 - 20H

          Macondo Trio  (BE/TO/IT)
           polyritmiek en melodie

Macondo is the collaboration between Beninese drummer Angelo Moustapha — collaborator of Philip Catherine and Lionel Loueke, and winner of numerous awards (Best Drummer in Africa, 2017; Talent d’Afrique, 2021) — and Belgian saxophonist Sylvain Debaisieux, an essential figure in jazz and improvised music in Belgium, known for collaborations with Stéphane Galland, Pentadox, Lynn Cassiers, and Ghalia Benali.

For the trio format, they were joined by the talented Italian double bassist Federico Stocchi, winner of the Toots Thielemans Awards 2018.

The exchange and richness of their respective musical journeys created an immediate connection, and their ability to listen and adapt quickly forged a strong musical bond. With joy and natural ease, they draw the audience into their world of rich polyrhythms and melodic storytelling. Inspired by African hymns and journeys through Europe, their melodies are built on cyclical and captivating bass lines. The listener is carried away by the trio’s flowing, energetic sound, immersed in repetitive patterns and mesmerizing grooves. They share vocals, exchange high-level solos and improvisations, always in a spirit of dialogue and communion with the audience.
