You cannot label Fulco Ottervanger. He is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, and improviser, also active in dance and theatre projects. He studied piano and classical composition at the conservatory of Ghent and later gained recognition through the internationally acclaimed electro-acoustic jazz trio De Beren Gieren, the krautpop band STADT, and BeraadGeslagen, his duo with drummer Lander Gyselinck. He is also part of the European jazz quartet Bonbon Flamme. Between 2016 and 2018, he served as city composer of the city of Ghent.

For quite some time, Fulco has dreamed of forming a new duo with the notorious Dutch double bassist Wilbert de Joode. The time has come — the moment is finally ripe.

Wilbert de Joode (Amsterdam, 11 May 1955) switched from bass guitar to double bass in 1982 as a self-taught musician. His talent was quickly recognized, and he soon began performing with a wide range of jazz-oriented groups, including the Ig Henneman Quintet and the Vera Vingerhoeds Quartet. In Amsterdam, De Joode became increasingly immersed in free improvisation music and gradually grew into one of the Netherlands’ most sought-after bassists.

Over the years, he developed long-standing musical partnerships with artists such as pianist Michiel Braam, reed player Ab Baars, cornetist Eric Boeren, and pianist Cor Fuhler. He has also frequently performed in Germany and the United States, both in established and ad hoc groups, alongside musicians including pianist Achim Kaufmann and reed players Frank Gratkowski and Ken Vandermark. Notably, he performed a series of concerts with American tenor saxophonist Charles Gayle and legendary drummer Sunny Murray.

In 2016, Wilbert de Joode received the Netherlands’ most prestigious jazz distinction, the Boy Edgar Prize.
