flirtations with cool and abstract jazz
3/4 PEACE is a jazz trio formed by Belgium's most lyrical saxophonist Ben Sluijs and two younger musicians at his side: the Belgian-Peruvian pianist Christian Mendoza and the French double bassist Brice Soniano. A trio setting like this is quite original and rather rare. Their first album in 2012 was inspired by drumless trios such as Jimmy Giuffre's with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow. In sometimes free explorations they look for subtle interactions, their own group color and sound. It is almost chamber music, but above all wonderful and beautifully thought-out jazz
They play both standard forms of jazz and free improvisations. A rhythmic bass line, both sustained and light and precise, can carry the playful lines of the piano as the alto tries to take flight...
